Control Fallacy

Artwork Interpretation
Two puppets are manipulated by a towering, faceless figure, symbolizing how distorted beliefs around control influence behavior. One puppet races forward while the other recoils in shame—both equally constrained by the illusion of powerlessness or over-responsibility. This visual illustrates the paradox at the heart of control fallacy: the client feels either entirely in charge of others’ emotions or completely at the mercy of them.
Resistance Pattern
The control fallacy appears in two forms: the belief that one is responsible for everything (internal control), or the belief that one is helpless and external factors dictate life (external control). Both forms distort agency and inhibit adaptive boundaries. This resistance may show up as guilt, over-functioning, blame-shifting, or emotional paralysis.
Inner Narrative
"It’s all my fault."
or
"There’s nothing I can do about it."
Therapeutic Challenge
Therapists must identify which version of the fallacy is operating and help clients reclaim accurate responsibility. Work often includes boundary repair, role clarification, and interrupting victim-persecutor-rescuer dynamics within the client’s family or relational system.
Insight Pathway
When clients begin to separate their influence from total control, they gain both humility and power. Therapy helps them locate their real agency, accept what is not theirs to hold, and let others feel discomfort without assuming blame or savior roles.

Cultural Considerations
Some cultures teach collective responsibility, filial duty, or interdependence that can be misread as control fallacy in Western therapy models. Therapists should explore whether the belief reflects cognitive distortion or a cultural value, and collaborate on how to navigate that tension in a way that preserves identity and honors growth.
